The adaptation will be based on the manga created by Yoshihiro Togashi. The series ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990 to 1994, and received an animated adaptation. The title has also received several video games. In 2018, KLab released a Yu Yu Hakusho mobile game titled Yu Yu Hakusho: 100% Maji Battle to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series.

Yu Yu Hakusho is only one of several animated series set to receive an adaptation through Netflix. One Piece is scheduled to receive a live action adaptation. Additionally, the Cowboy Bebop live action series will air this month. Netflix shared several trailers for the show leading up to its November 19, 2021 release. This has included the opening credits, which pays homage to the original opening of the animated series.

The Yu Yu Hakusho live action series is currently in production for Netflix, and will release sometime in December 2023.
