In a recent Famitsu interview looking back on 10 years of Final Fantasy XIV, Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida (or Yoshi-P) mentioned that the team has intentions of continuing support for the game for at least another 10 years. While the Endwalker expansion put an end to the Hydaelyn/Zodiark Arc, the upcoming Dawntrail expansion will start a brand-new narrative. [Thanks, Famitsu!]
Additionally, Yoshi-P mentioned that putting an end to the overarching FFXIV story with the Endwalker expansion might seem shortsighted from a business standpoint, since MMORPGs don’t have traditional endings.
Here is a direct quote by Yoshi-P on the trajectory of FFXIV:
“We intend to deliver the highest possible level of catharsis (with Dawntrail). This is something that we could only achieve thanks to (the story concluded in) Endwalker continuing for over 10 years. I would like to aim to achieve the same goal for the next 10 years.”
Yoshi-P also said that when thinking about the future of the game, he is concerned about how much the Final Fantasy XIV team should differentiate themselves from what they have created for the past 10 years. However, he also mentioned feeling excited about entering a new creative stage.
Final Fantasy XIV is available to play now on the PC, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 and is coming to Xbox Series X in Spring 2024. A paid subscription is required. Patch 7.0 and the Dawntrail expansion will arrive in Summer 2024.
