X, the Wii U game from Xenoblade developer Monolith Soft, will be an open-world game, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced this morning.

X (a tentative title) is being developed with the goal of creating a large-scale open world with “seamless exploration,” Iwata said, and that Monolith are utilizing experience gleaned while developing Xenoblade as they work on the game.

X will allow you to explore on foot on land, but will also allow you to ride special mechs in the game, that will be capable of traversing both on the ground as well as through the sky.

The game is slated for release in 2014.
