Square Enix is expanding on the World of Final Fantasy series with a new smartphone game called World of Final Fantasy: Meli-Melo. Here’s a first look with new screenshots, trailer, and plenty of details.
Valgallan is a world where tiny people known as Lilikins co-exist with legendary beings known as Mirages.
The land is split into five different parts that is said to be the wellspring of all energies of fire, ice, wood, light, and darkness. The five guardians that wield those powers are known as the Guardian Beasts.
And all the Lilikins of Valgallan are protected by the “Holy Crystal” at the capital of Baron, where it is protected by the king.
However, a “day of darkness” arrives…
During the ceremony celebrating the 1,000-year anniversary of the country, the king of Baron “King Cecil” suddenly gets sucked into the darkness before the many in front of him and goes missing.
This is where you, the player, are summoned into Valgallan.
With the “Garden-User” power that lets you befriend Mirages, you must save the world from its fate to destruction.
Player
As a “Dome-User” you’ll use powers of the “Garden Dome” that lets you befriend Mirages and start all kinds of miracles in the alternate world that is Valgallan.
Meru (CV: Kaito Ishikawa)
A mirage who takes care of the player and provides support. He has a butler-like demeanor and has a polite way of talking. He’ll help out as a navigator but won’t participate in battles.
Tama (CV: Ayana Taketatsu)
A Mirage who supports the player within the Garden Dome. She’ll help for Garden Dome and Mirage upbringing. Originally she’s been helping various people across different worlds but has left Valgallan to Meru.
Seraphii (CV: Eri Kitamura)
A Mirage that provides informational support within the player’s Garden Dome. She uses a special ability called “Gossip Gather” that allows her to observe the player’s surroundings. She’s a self-proclaimed mascot character.
Nevan (CV: Yuko Kobayashi)
A mysterious Mirage that was sealed in the Whitey’s capsule for a long time. After hearing that the player has entered the Mirage Dome, an embodiment of the Mirage’s heart, Nevan forces itself into your party. She’s logical and understanding, so it doesn’t seem like she’s a bad Mirage…
Whitey Gang
These guys use a capsule-like object that seals Mirages. The group consists of the rather air-headed Whitey, the serious attendant Seryu, and the somewhat of a klutz in Pui-Pui. They seem to have a big objective and appear before the player…
Lann/Reynn
Twin brother and sisters from an alternate world that isn’t Valgallan, and knows how to use Mirages. They appeared to have arrived in Valgallan out of nowhere.
Enna Kros (CV: Kana Hanazawa)
She’s a nice person but can be a bit of a self-proclaimed God. In response to the cries of help from Valgallan, she leads the Player to the alternate world and unlocks their power. As a God, she doesn’t interfere much with any of the worlds herself.
In World of Final Fantasy: Meli-Melo you’ll raise Mirages in the Garden. By using the magic rocks called “Rise” from going on adventures or exploring, you can help them grow. Mirages learn all kinds of different abilities based on how they grow.
The battles take place automatically. You’ll need to make parties with affinity and attributes in mind, while using abilities to your advantage. The powerful cooperative “Stacking” moves come from a combination of Mirages that vary depending on how you mix them up. This can be used to completely reverse the tables.
By Stacking the right Mirages, you can pull off a super special “Mega Mirage Summon” that calls out giant mirages, or summon heroes from past Final Fantasy games known as “Champions” to help in battle.
The “Dream Challenge” is where you use the “Mirage Dome” acquired through adventure, and can team up with a party of up to four players. By clearing the Dream Challenge you can get limited Mirages or special growth items.
After clearing the “Starting Land” in Adventure Mode you’ll unlock the starting scenario as a manga and can read it from the Garden library.
World of Final Fantasy: Meli-Melo is in development for iOS and Android. Its pre-registration campaign is now live in Japan and you can check it out here. A NicoNico Live stream will have more details on November 25 at 8:00pm JST.
