While The Walking Dead video game ties into the comic universe, it follows convict Lee Everett and Clementine, an orphaned girl, instead of Rick’s group. "If you were playing with Rick you would basically be doing the same stuff or you would be playing some kind of BS game that wouldn’t have anything to do with the comic series," The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman said in Telltale’s Playing Dead series. "What is unique about this game is by focusing on a character that isn’t key to the comic book series you’re able to see stories that do matter to the continuity."

Kirkman also explains The Walking Dead game will explain Glenn’s backstory and there is some gameplay footage (less than the leaked opening video though!) in this episode of Playing Dead.
