Now that the 5.0 Genshin Impact update is here, everyone gets to pick a free 5 star standard character, but picking the best one for you might be tricky! Depending on how long you’ve been playing or who you also own, that answer can change. Here’s how to decide who to get.
How do I get my free standard 5 star character in Genshin Impact?
Well, this is a time-sensitive giveaway designed to celebrate the 5.0 launch in Genshin Impact. So there are two things to remember when it comes to this giveaway.
First, play through the tutorial until you unlock the gacha. If you haven’t gotten to the point where you can access the Wanderlust Invocation Standard Wish banner, you can’t pick a free character. This usually takes an hour or so, maybe less, to do after first starting the game. So make sure you do that!
The second part is that this is limited! So you need to grab the Genshin Impact update, boot it up, and claim that character by October 8, 2024. There will be an in-game event section in the update announcements where you can claim it.
Which standard 5 star character in Genshin Impact is best for me?
Like I said earlier, this depends! If you’ve been playing Genshin Impact since its 2020 launch, the best option for your free standard 5 star character might be whichever one you don’t have. That’s fun for the sake of completion! If you already have all seven options, the one you find you actually already use the most is your best choice. That’s because you’ll unlock a new constellation for them and make them stronger.
But if either of those don’t apply to you, here are the characters I recommend.
If you want a DPS character: Keqing
Keqing is a pretty versatile main DPS. Her standard attack can combo up to five times, and the charged version of that might make you feel like you’re playing as Vergil from Devil May Cry. Her Stellar Restoration Elemental Skill lets you deal AOE damage and place a Stiletto that she can teleport to in order to attack or reach a spot. Not to mention her Elemental Burst is great for dealing AOE damage.
Keqing works well with a ton of four-stars, like Fischl, Xiangling, and Xingqiu. She also plays well with five-stars like Kazuha, Kokomi, Mona, and Zhongli.
If you want another support character: Jeane
Jeane is great for both her healing capabilities and the fact that you can use swirl for a great elemental reaction with other party members. Her Dandelion Breeze Elemental Burst will heal all of your characters or any other people you’re playing with immediately and add a regen effect within a field. Said field also deals Anemo damage, which is great. You can also use her Gale Blade Elemental Skill to deal Anemo damage and, if you hold it, do some crowd control by making everyone gather around her.
She works well with people like Ayato, Childe, Furina, Ganyu, Hu Tao, Keqing, and Raiden Shogun.
If you want a sub-DPS character: Tighnari
Tighnari is a really solid sub-DPS character, and him being a Dendro unit means he could be the best standard 5 star option for a Genshin Impact player who hasn’t played for a while, missed when that element was added, and is coming back. His Vijnana-Phala Mine Elemental Skill is good for dealing Dendro AOE damage and setting up a distraction field that can help protect whoever is on the field as your current main. I also love that his Elemental Burst involve a homing attack that deals Dendro damage. He’s exactly what you want from a character you quickly pull in, use, then send away.
He works best with Cryo or Electro characters, so try to have him work with folks like Cyno, Diona, Fischl, Keqing, Kazuha, Lisa,
Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and you can claim a free standard 5 star until October 8, 2024.
