Like previous entries in the series, Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a variety of companions you can choose to take on your journey. While Withers more or less alleviates any gaps that may potentially not be filled with his unique ability to change the class of any character in your party, there are no doubt some companions that are better than others. Especially if you don’t intend on changing their classes. So here are our suggestions for some of the best companions in Baldur’s Gate 3.
The Best Companions in Baldur’s Gate 3
Astarion
Without a doubt, Astarion is one of the best companions you can get in Baldur’s Gate 3. Not only is he capable of healing himself by draining enemies of their own life force with a bite, but he’s a fantastic Rogue. Astarion can branch out into one of three subclasses, with Arcane Trickster and Assassin being the better ones.
Arcane Trickster allows him to learn and cast spells like Magic Missile, which is one of the best spells in the game hands-down, and Assassin makes him more proficient at backstabbing. Astarion is also great outside of combat when it comes to picking locks, disarming traps, or passing general perception checks. Once he joined my party, he never left it.
Gale
Magic is one of the most powerful forces in all of Faerun, and Gale just happens to be an incredibly capable Wizard. While he won’t start off the strongest, if you provide him with enough spells like Fireball and Curriculum of Strategy: Artistry of War, then he can one-shot bosses on any difficulty depending on the encounter. For this, he makes my “Best Companions” list in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Even if you don’t want to use any massive area of effect spells like Fireball, the incredible amount of Magic Missiles he can cast make him a formidable threat. But really, you want to get him Curriculum of Strategy: Artistry of War, because that’s when Gale will become an unstoppable force that can fell a Red Dragon in a single cast of magic.
Wyll
Another caster, Wyll is a Warlock. This means he has access to Eldritch Blast. Much like Magic Missile, Eldritch Blast is an early level spell that just becomes monstrous as you level up. Additionally, Warlocks are one of the most formidable classes in the game, and are all around great for those new to games like Baldur’s Gate 3 as they provide a healthy balance of melee and magic. Wyll just happens to be right there, and with the right party he’s an incredible addition.
Lae’zel
Yes, Minsc could have taken this spot on our list, but Baldur’s Gate 3 proves that sometimes the simplest method of killing your enemy is the most effective. And Lae’zel is the best example of this. As a Fighter, she occupies the most straightforward class in the game. Hand her a weapon and she can kill just about anything with it. If you pick the Battle Master subclass, anything she picks up is a lethal weapon. She also gets some great passives that allow her to lead the charge and kill whatever stands in your way with very little effort.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PC and PlayStation 5. You can read our suggestions for the best Subclasses for each of these companion characters here.
