When to Promote Characters in Unicorn Overlord

We already talked about how when you reach Rank B in Unicorn Overlord, you can take the Overlord Quest “Better than Ever” and promote characters, but you may wonder when is the right time. Unlike a game like Fire Emblem, you don’t need to wait to improve a character.

When should I promote characters in Unicorn Overlord?

Well, honestly, the right answer for you could be “when I have enough Honors and am near a fortress after hitting Rank B Renown.” This is because while Fire Emblem offers benefits and means you could be missing out on stat points if you promote before hitting the level cap for the initial class type, your ensuing promoted unit won’t be as strong. Here, that isn’t an issue. You don’t miss out on anything if you promote right away. Plus, promoting as soon as you can could mean getting new tactical abilities you can set to make characters even better in battles. So as long as you have the 30-50 Honors, it could be worth it to upgrade right away.

However, I have another recommendation. Don’t go overboard and immediately promote all of the characters the second when you can in Unicorn Overlord. I’d say promote one in each unit that you really like and find effective. Like absolutely promote people like Alain, Scarlett, and Virginia. But what you also want to do is stockpile Honors for when you hit Rank A. That’s when you can get units to hold five characters when putting together formations, and I’ve found that is way more helpful than more promoted characters sometimes. You need 200 Honors for each squad’s upgrade, so save up for that.

Unicorn Overlord is available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X
