Giant Sparrow (creator of The Unfinished Swan) has unveiled a new trailer and the first screenshots from its upcoming story-driven adventure What Remains of Edith Finch, which will be coming exclusively to PlayStation 4 in 2016.
What Remains of Edith Finch is a collection of short stories told from a first-person perspective about a cursed family in Washington State. Each of the stories lets you experience the life of one of the members of the Finch family, ranging from the early 1900s to modern day. Each story will end with that family member’s death.
Despite the fact that you experience all of these stories, the main thread that runs through What Remains of Edith Finch is, well, Edith Finch. As her, you’ll be exploring the Finch’s grand family house trying to figure out why she’s the last of her family left alive. You do this by rifling through possessions that the family has left behind, finding the stories in the objects in their bedrooms, and the bizarre architecture of this old house.
“The Finch family house, by the way, is crazy,” writes Ian Dallas of Giant Sparrow. “The family has been living here for the last hundred years and each generation adds on to it. By the time Edith arrives the house is an enormous artifact influenced by a range of eccentric, stubborn folks.”
Giant Sparrow hopes that while the house is fantastical and zany, that it’s also believable and familiar, much like the stories it tells. You can see more screenshots that show the gnarled nature of this house below.
