The Nintendo Switch 2 is pretty much inevitable at this point in time. No matter the official name of the console or what it looks like, the successor to the glorious hybrid Switch is surely on its way. However, we have less certainty about its features. Here are the various Nintendo Switch 2 features we want to see from the upcoming console.
Features We Want from Switch 2: Backwards Compatibility
If there is any feature on this list I am confident in happening the most, it is this one. Backwards compatibility is so crucial to the success of the Switch 2. The library on the original Nintendo Switch is incredible. Allowing users to instantly be able to play all of their physical and digital games on the Switch 2 would gladly promote upgrades. In addition, it would be nice if technically struggling games like Pokemon Scarlet & Violet benefited from the power of the new console.
OLED’s Return
This is less likely to happen but I would appreciate the return of an OLED screen for the new Switch. Upgrading to the Switch OLED has made never want to go back to a traditional LCD screen ever again. The crisp, bright, and colorful nature of the OLED screen has honestly made up for some of the shortcomings of the Switch’s power. Just think of what it could do for its successor. I would be happy to pay more for an optional OLED version.
Fantastic Launch Lineup
Some of the best games from entire Nintendo generations were right there at the start. Breath of the Wild, Super Mario 64, Twilight Princess, and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II are just a few. Zelda is off the cards at this point. As such, our best bets is to see a new 3D Mario in the vein of Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 9, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond at launch. That would be a pretty excellent start to the Switch’s successor.
Meaningful Power
We all know the Switch 2 is going to be more powerful than the Switch, but how much? I don’t think the likely hybrid console has to be as powerful as the PS5 or Xbox Series X. But it would be nice for it to come at least close and be at least stronger than the base PS4 or Xbox One.
Having 4K resolution on TV, 1080p in handheld, and the ability to comfortably play most third-party titles on the current generation feel like Nintendo Switch 2 features we must have for this new console to come close to the original Switch’s resounding success. Seeing major third-party games like Dragon Age: The Veilguard and Assassin’s Creed Shadows would be a welcome shift.
