Ever since Tecmo unveiled their third person shooter, Quantum, the media has compared it to Gears of War. When Makoto Shibata, Director, showed the game to me I asked how he felt about the constant comparisons.

“The comparisons are OK. Resident Evil 4 is what started the TPS (third person shooter) genre. Gears took that further and is another evolution,” Shibata replied. Later in the interview, after discussing graphic violence, Shibata followed up with, “The first question you asked, ‘is it tough being compared to much to Gears of War’ was interesting. That’s the first time we’ve actually been asked that.”

“No way,” I hastily said. “Are you serious?”

Peter Garza, Localization Producer, chimed in. “Everybody says it, always Gears, but nobody ever asks anything about being compared to Gears.”

Quantum, Tecmo’s first third person shooting game, is slated for release on the PlayStation 3 next year. You’ll hear more about Quantum in our developer interview way before then.
