What Are FFXIV Coins on Xbox and How to Get Them

Final Fantasy XIV is finally available for players to check out on Xbox Series X after so many years of Square Enix teasing and us waiting for it. But this launch comes with some awkward elements, such as the requirement to have an Xbox Game Pass subscription to play the MMORPG and the confusing new FFXIV Coins that are only on the system.

How do FFXIV Coins work on the Xbox Series X and S?

Players can essentially think of the new Coins as a new microtransaction currency for Final Fantasy XIV. You could consider them to be similar to the already existing Crysta currency on the Mogstation website. However, there are some key differences. (More on that in a bit!) Players are able to buy these Coins through the Microsoft Store on the website and through your actual Xbox Series X or S.

The Coins are sold starting from 500 Coins for $4.99 and going all the way up to 10,000 Coins for $99.49. You can then use this currency at the optional store to buy cosmetics, emotes, and the like for your FFXIV account. Most importantly, it can be used to subscribe to the MMO.

Here is where it gets a little weird, though. These FFXIV Coins are restricted by regions.

So, for instance, let’s say you have an Xbox you got from Europe and have a European account on. But you originally started your FFXIV account in North America years ago before moving. If you buy them on your European Microsoft account, they will only work with European MMO accounts. So, you need to make sure you are able to buy Coins that match the region your MMO account is in or you may have a headache on your hands.

FFXIV Coins vs. Crysta Explained

As you may surmise, FFXIV Coins are basically like the Xbox’s version of Crysta. As for why these are necessary, we don’t know. The only problem with Coins is you can only buy them in increments unlike Crysta, which you can pick random numbers like 1999. This means if you have the entry-level subscription, you still have to buy 1,500 Coins, instead of 1,300.

In addition, these Coins are only for Xbox. You won’t even see them on PC or Steam, so it is a strange and sometimes even frustrating situation.

Final Fantasy XIV is available for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
