Last week, Japan had an extremely big week with the long-anticipated release of Dragon Quest XI for Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4. Other titles also released, but those don’t matter because Dragon Quest XI.

Okay, joking aside, Kenka Bancho Otome, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, Wagamama High Spec, and Hiiro no Kakera also debuted in Japan. Japanese sales tracker Media Create shares the latest on software and hardware sales data from the week of July 27 through July 30, 2017.

The #1 and #2 punch of the week goes as expected with Dragon Quest XI on Nintendo 3DS selling a whopping 1,148,888 copies and Dragon Quest XI on PlayStation 4 which sold 950,315 units for combined total of 2,099,203 units sold between both versions.

Here’s how Dragon Quest XI’s debut compares to previously main-numbered Dragon Quest titles (excluding the MMORPG title Dragon Quest X):

  • Dragon Quest VIII – 2,167,072 [PS2] (LTD 3,738,123)
  • Dragon Quest IX – 2,318,932 [NDS] (LTD 4,410,154)
  • Dragon Quest XI – 2,099,203 [3DS/PS4] (LTD ???)

As you can see, Dragon Quest XI fell a little short of the debuts for Dragon Quest VIII and Dragon Quest IX, but keep in mind that Dragon Quest XI released in an era where video game sales are at a low in Japan. We can expect to see its sales continue growing but it likely won’t surpass Dragon Quest IX without multiplayer, DLC, and StreetPass features that kept both players and sales going.

  • Dragon Quest XI for Nintendo 3DS – 1,148,888
  • Dragon Quest XI for PlayStation 4 – 950,315

The above is a look at a 3DS vs. PS4 comparison chart for Dragon Quest XI. It started out closely for week 1, but this is probably as close as it gets, as we can expect to see the Nintendo 3DS version continue selling more in the long run. It should be interesting to see how they perform in the coming weeks. Square Enix will likely reveal their total sales numbers including digital sales sometime later.

On the hardware front, we saw some big increases in the 3DS family, especially the recently released New 2DS LL that went from 17,717 units sold last week to a whopping 110,963 units this week, making it the biggest increase of all hardware in the week. The PlayStation 4 sold an impressive 82,368 plus an extra 10,988 PS4 Pro units for a total of 93,356 units between the two. The Nintendo Switch also had another noteworthy week with 89,314 units sold in the second week after Splatoon 2’s release. Going by Media Create’s numbers, the Switch is now at 1,285,299 units sold in Japan since its launch in March.
