<< How to read and understand sales
Last week, Japan saw a few major releases, with the biggest one being Dragon Quest Heroes II on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita. Overwatch and Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator also tagged along. Media Create provides us with a look at video game sales data for software and hardware that sold from the week of May 23 through May 29, 2016.
The king of this week’s software goes to Dragon Quest Heroes II—no contest about that. It took the top three spots with 184,820 units sold on PlayStation 4, 120,664 units on PlayStation Vita, and 68,376 on PlayStation 3 for a total of 373,860 units sold across all three platforms.
To give you an idea on how it stacks with the previous title, the first Dragon Quest Heroes marched out a combined total of 594,749 copies in its debut week between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 versions (325,446 on PS4 and 269,303 on PS3). The predecessor might make its sequel look worse if you go by numbers alone, but keep in mind that Dragon Quest Heroes was a pretty big deal given that it was the first Musou-style Dragon Quest title ever, so there was plenty of excitement surrounding it at the time. Another thing worth mentioning is that it took just a little over a year for the sequel to release in Japan, so one could imagine that fans can only take on so many thousands of Slimes and Dracky hordes. Nonetheless, those are still good numbers for the company.
The latest hype train that is Overwatch made its stop in Japan as well, putting the game at #4 with 58,363 copies sold in its first week debut. This makes it the best-selling debut for any Blizzard title in Japan, beating out Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Ultimate Evil Edition back in 2014 which sold a combined total of 33,648 copies (17,843 on PS4 and 15,816 on PS3). Certainly not bad for a company that was practically unknown in Japan until recent years.
Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator took the #5 and #8 spots with 17,829 copies sold on PlayStation 4 and 9,385 copies on PlayStation 3 for a combined total of 27,214 copies between the two platforms. Guilty Gear Xrd –Sign- sold 39,916 copies in its debut back in December 2014, so the second entry from the latest series took a bit of a dip there, but again, it’s only been about a year and half since the release of the first game, so I don’t think anyone was really expecting it to out-sell it by any means.
Last but not least, we have ClaDun Sengoku that also made its debut on PlayStation Vita, taking the #15 spot with 4,459 units sold. The previous title from the series in ClaDun2 for PSP sold 5,956 units back in 2011. Back then, it was mentioned that the game was able to break even with the low development costs on the PSP for such titles, but I wonder if the same applies for the new PlayStation Vita game at similar figures.
The hardware sales saw another stagnant week for the most part, but the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita got a bump by a few thousand compared to the week before. That’s definitely the power of Dragon Quest at work here.
