<< How to read and understand sales
Last week, Japan had another big week with the release of three major titles in Call of Duty: WWII, .hack//G.U. Last Recode on PS4, and Style Savvy: Styling Star on the Nintendo 3DS. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest software and hardware sales data from the week of October 30 through November 5, 2017.
First place of the week comes as a big surprise with Call of Duty: WWII taking the crown with 168,324 units sold in its debut for PlayStation 4. The last main series entry in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare debuted with 105,764 units in its Japanese debut in November 2016.
After a tremendous debut, Super Mario Odyssey charted at #2 with 116,931 units sold for Nintendo Switch. It currently sits at 578,969 units sold via retail in Japan since its release.
At #3 we have the return of the .hack series with .hack//G.U. Last Recode with 61,816 units sold for PS4. Those numbers are comparable to .hack//Link’s debut of 60,478 units sold on PSP back in March 2010.
Next up, we have Style Savvy: Styling Star’s opening of 32,176 units sold on 3DS. Its predecessor, Style Savvy: Fashion Forward sold 55,179 units in April 2015, making Styling Star the lowest debut for the series. However, keep in mind that this is the third entry of the series on 3DS and its fans are more on the casual side, meaning unlike fans of the Call of Duty games they’re less likely to keep buying its sequels, so it makes sense to see it drop for the third installment on the platform.
Hardware sales saw an increase in PS4 consoles and the 3DS LL, likely thanks to Call of Duty: WWII and Style Savvy: Styling Star. The Nintendo Switch was again the top-selling console with 64,387 units sold. This puts it at 2,084,370 units sold in Japan going by Media Create’s numbers.
