Frozenbyte will be releasing Trine 3 on Steam Early Access tomorrow, April 21st. Why release the game via Early Access first? Here’s what the studio had to say:

Trine 3 is our first move towards 3D-gameplay in the Trine series, so we wanted to get in touch with our player-base in an early enough phase to collect feedback on the new gameplay features, so we can tweak those into the right direction. Early Access can hopefully provide us with lots of players willing to do this.”

Trine 3 will remain in Early Access for “a few months”. The game is scheduled to launch sometime during or after this Summer. The Early Access build will have two maps playable at launch and will contain a local co-op multiplayer mode. All three characters—Thief, Wizard, and Knight—will be available. Early Access will be used to gather player feedback and tweak the game’s features and controls based around the feedback sent Frozenbyte’s way.

The full version of Trine 3 will aim to provide 6-7 hours of “total playable content”. It will include an online multiplayer mode as well as a level editor and special challenge levels that are not necessarily connected to the story. Frozenbyte add that the Early Access build of the game is being priced slightly lower than the final version of Trine 3 will be.
