Command battles play out as traditional turn-based encounters that fans of the Trails series will recognize quite well. These battles offer a familiar, tactical experience where players can meticulously plan each move. However the battles move faster and more fluidly due to Falcom’s refining.

The link system from the Cold Steel series returns, although further improved. This allows players to form and modify links between characters on the fly. This means even command battles feel so much quicker than past games. All bosses and tougher enemies trigger command mode. Therefore the most challenging battles retain the strategic depth that the series is known for.

On the other hand, Field Battles introduce a real-time combat element, primarily used to handle mobs on the overworld. These battles are quick and efficient, allowing players to dispatch enemies without transitioning to a separate battle screen. Your move pool is limited, offering only an attack, a dodge and a charged attack. However, for the type of enemies you fight in this mode it should be plenty. This innovation significantly speeds up traversal and reduces the downtime associated with frequent encounters.

When to use Command and Field battle in Trails through Daybreak

A single button press can transition a Field battle into a Command battle, which can be strategically advantageous. Stunning an enemy in Field mode before switching to Command mode gives the player an upper hand. This is the same as in older games starting the turn-based battle with an advantage. Conversely, a player’s health dropping too low in a Field battle forces them into Command mode. Here, the enemy gains the advantage, similar to an ambush in past titles.

This dual combat system in Trails through Daybreak adds a further layer of strategy and versatility, making each encounter engaging and dynamic. Knowing which mode to use for each encounter can make or break your strategy. Whether you prefer the meticulous planning of Command battles or the fast-paced action of Field battles, Trails through Daybreak offers the best of both worlds.
