Citizens of Earth puts you in the shoes of the Vice President of the World… and like most politicians you have no special powers. But, hey you’re a charismatic fellow so you recruit townspeople to fight in battles for you.
I met the designers, Eden Industries, at the Media Indie Exchange who said the game’s world design was inspired by Earthbound and there’s a whole city to explore. What’s neat is when you bring characters like the town baker (who heals players with tasty treats) into battle they get better at their town jobs too. When the baker gets stronger he will sell you rare healing items. Each character has a world ability and battle abilities. The Barista that works at Moonbucks can scald enemies with boiling hot coffee in battle and sells pick me up power ups at the coffee shop. The Mascot who looks like one of those D- volcano science fair projects is essentially a buffer that cheers the party on and can boost the growth rate of all of the townsfolk with his world ability. Citizens of Earth will have over 50 characters to recruit.
The game has wacky enemies like a Honey Bear… which is a honey filled bear shaped like a bottle of honey and a Toupee Eagle. Bald Eagle. Toupee Eagle, get it? Players will also run into a Rastafarian Samurai, but you won’t run into him randomly. Citizens of Earth puts enemies on the map and you can command your followers to strike mobs first to start combat. In battle, you have three followers and fight using a turn based system. Citizens of Earth also has an online versus mode where you can bring a team of characters and fight with a friend.
Citizens of Earth is slated for release on March 14, 2014 for Wii U, PC, Mac, iPhone, and Android.
