Top-seller: Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Extend – 184,673

Nintendo 3DS sales: 103,962 | Total sales: 2,460,877

Last week’s top-seller in Japan was Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Extend. No surprises there, whatsoever. Project Diva Extend sold 184,673 copies in its first week, putting it in between both its PSP predecessors. First week sales for those games were as follows:

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva (2009) – 101,414

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2nd (2010) – 241,467

Keep in mind that Extend was once called “Project Diva 2.5,” and is more of a “best hits” expansion than an actual third game, so comparing it to a brand new game like Project Diva 2nd — which had a load of new songs and features — wouldn’t be fair.

Meanwhile, Super Mario 3D Land slipped from #1 to the #4 spot last week. I was a little alarmed by the large drop in sales from the week prior when it was released, so I looked up data for Super Mario Galaxy 2, in order to have something to compare it to.

Super Mario Galaxy – Week 1: 339,901 | Week 2: 105,149 (69% drop)

Super Mario 3D Land – Week 1: 343,492 | Week 2: 93,441 (73% drop)

While 3D Land has in fact suffered a larger drop in its second week, two things to keep in mind are that total 3DS sales are nowhere near those of the Wii in 2010, and that the holiday season is right around the corner, which bodes well for popular titles like Mario and for the 3DS itself. We’ll probably be seeing this game on the charts for many weeks to come.

Finally, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition came and went without many people noticing. We suspect the HD versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 will do better. PokéPark 2: Beyond the World didn’t make much of a splash either, but again, Pokémon is one of those things that could benefit greatly from the holidays.

Finally, Cave’s Instant Brain was released last week as well, and failed to chart in the top 20. The full top 20 list for last week is as follows:
