It seems a The World Ends with You sequel isn’t on the way. Rather, an Anime Expo Lite tease from May 2020 has turned into a new adaptation of the existing story. Square Enix has opened up a countdown site for a The World Ends with You anime adaptation. It will reveal something in seven days on July 2, 2020, the day Anime Expo Lite begins.
Here’s what happened. The key art for Anime Expo this year had the cast of The World Ends with You on the cover with the event’s original characters. There weren’t many other details, though it did mention 2020 and was noted to be the Anime Expo 2020 booklet art until that event was canceled.
As for the The World Ends with You anime site, it features a broken countdown clock with 160 hours on it. It says “The Animation” and “You have 7 Days.” Coincidentally, that’s how long Neku and each of the other participants have to play the Reaper’s Game in the actual game. The website address references the Japanese title, Subarashiki Kono Sekai: It’s a Wonderful World.
The World Ends with You is available on the Nintendo DS, Android devices, and Apple iOS devices. The World Ends with You: Final Mix is available for the Nintendo Switch.
