Funimation announced that Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night will be screened in theaters and IMAX in both the United States and Canada on December 3, 2021. Following this, the film will open in Australia and New Zealand on December 9, 2021. The specific release date for Sword Art Online Progressive in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Latin America has yet to be announced. The film will be screened both in Japanese with English subtitles, and with an English dub.
A new trailer was also uploaded by Aniplex USA ahead of the film’s release.
Serving as an expanded retelling of the Aincrad storyline, this Sword Art Online movie will delve more deeply into Kirito and Asuna’s early days in the virtual world and their subsequent journey into the first floor of Aincrad Tower. The original anime series only alluded to these events in flashbacks. This film is adapted from the first volume of the Progressive light novel series.
Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night will open in the United States and Canada on December 3, 2021, with tickets on sale on November 5, 2021. Tickets for the December 9, 2021 premiere in Australia and New Zealand will go on sale starting November 9, 2021. The film opens in Japan on October 30, 2021.
