Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS will have two kinds of online modes—For Fun and For Glory. Director Masahiro Sakurai discussed both modes in a Nintendo Direct presentation this afternoon.
For Fun mode will select stages at random, will enable all items, and will only record the number of times you’ve won matches. In this mode, only Smash Battles are possible.
Meanwhile, For Glory mode is—in a hilarious twist—a mode with no items, Final Destination stage only, and both wins and losses recorded. In this mode, 1-on-1 battles will be possible as well. The catch is that almost every stage in the game now has a completely flat “Final Destination” version, so you’ll have plenty of stage variety.
Online names will be linked to Nintendo Network IDs when playing online, Sakurai said. This will enable players to report troublemakers. Nintendo plan on taking actions against players that cause trouble. You can view an overview of this in the image above.
Additionally, Nintendo have confirmed that while playing with friends, full customization is available–players can set the rules, stages and items however they want.
Update: The “For Fun” and “For Glory” modes will be available on both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS during online multiplayer.
Update 2: Full-customization when playing with friends.
