While the video makes it seem as if Mario can switch themes in between level layers, this is likely an editing trick to representing the passing of the years, with each era being written out in kanji via objects in the game.

We can see this with the Showa era (seen in Mario 1 style; Super Mario Bros. released on the Famicom in 1985 in the Showa era), Heisei era (seen in Super Mario World style; Super Mario World released in 1990, making it the first Mario platformer to release after the Heisei era began), and the new Reiwa era, with Super Mario Maker 2 (represented by the Super Mario 3D World style, as it is the latest gameplay style to be included).

The 3D World section is by far the most interesting, as it shows off more of the new enemies that can be added to the style, such as Bullies, Ant Troopers, and more. It also shows how Mario will do his mid-air pose after reaching the flagpole just like the original Wii U game, alongside a ‘Meow’ if he’s currently Cat Mario.

Super Mario Maker 2 unleashes on the Nintendo Switch on June 28, 2019. Check out ‘Meowser’ and more new objects that can be placed, such as a claw grabber, in our previous post here.
