During the June 2020 PlayStation 5 event, one of the surprises that showed up was Project Athia. It is a Square Enix game which seemed to feature a woman wandering around an alternate reality. In an interview, Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda said that the title will be an open-world game. [Thanks, Toyo Keizai via Game’s Talk!]
Here’s Matsuda’s exact quote:
Project Athia, a game we are investing in for the PlayStation 5, will be an open world game where users will be able to freely travel around the game world.
With the PlayStation 5, we have been able to add better light reflections with ray tracing technology, as well as increase the graphical capabilities, to the point where even when comparing it to the PC screens, there are barely any differences. We have harnessed this feature to create something stunningly detailed.
We plan to balance out game development on titles that fit our company’s characteristics, including smartphone games and cloud games. We will definitely not give up development for high-end consoles like the PS5 and other ones, because these are at the forefront of technology.
Project Athia is currently in development for the PlayStation 5 and PC. Previously, Gary Whitta was revealed to be the game’s writing team lead.
