Sonic Forces, previously known as Project Sonic 2017, was officially unveiled by Sega during SXSW and described by Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka as an “evolution of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations.” New gameplay from the upcoming Sonic title was also shown off, featuring a look at a level from the game. Game Informer was given an extended preview of the gameplay, and they made note of a handful of interesting details.

In Sonic Forces, many characters from the Sonic series such as Knuckles, Amy, and more will make appearances. However, it was noted that these side characters will not be playable.

Additionally, when Sonic Forces was unveiled, it was revealed that the game would feature three unique types of gameplay, including modern and classic styles. During their preview, Game Informer mentioned that, at some point in the gameplay, “Sonic lands on a platform and the camera shifts to a side-perspective to deliver the modern gameplay with a side-scrolling twist that we’ve seen in prior games.” Whether or not this is the third style of gameplay will remain to be seen until more information becomes available.

Sonic Forces is set to release worldwide in Q4 2017 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
