Act 3 sees the conclusion of everyone’s storylines in Baldur’s Gate 3, but one of the most complicated (and controversial) has to do with which ending you pick for Karlach. You have the option to go with Karlach to the Hells of Avernus and save her or opt for the already existing endings. Which is the best one?
Should You Take Karlach to Avernus in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Editor’s Note: There will be spoilers below.
Many fans weren’t happy with the two endings for Karlach in Baldur’s Gate 3, which is why Larian Studios changed things to add a new ending in the form of going to the Hells of Avernus with her. This ending requires you not to complete Wyll’s companion quest yet.
If you choose to go to the Hells with Karlach, you’ll have to take on a horde of enemies to defeat. It is one of the toughest battles in the game, and the reward is letting Karlach live. But are you really saving her? After all, she is forced to return to her demonic masters who forced the Infernal Engine heart on her in the first place.
This doesn’t seem like a positive ending at all, even for evil players. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to go for this route, as it is submitting Karlach to eternal punishment by the people she hates. Instead, I think you should opt for the other two endings, both of which are also not that great, but at least somewhat passable.
If you’re going the evil route, let Karlach die once she removes the parasite for good. This will at least put her out of her misery and let you be evil. On the other hand, the other option is to let her become the Mind Flayer. I find this to be the best ending for her right now, unless your player character wants to become the Mind Flayer, instead.
In the end, none of Karlach’s endings are that impressive, even with the changes Larian made post-launch. It remains to be seen if further changes will happen in the future to give her a more complete conclusion.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for the PS5 and PC and will release for the Xbox Series X/S in 2023.
