Should You Fight the Nord Mines Dragon in Metaphor: ReFantazio

Your first few days before the funeral in Metaphor: ReFantazio are something of a learning experience and tutorial, and the Fire Dragon Mauna fight in the Nord Mines is no exception. In one way, it could be seen as teaching you how to more stealthily navigate a part of a dungeon with a dangerous enemy in it. However, it’s also a good lesson in knowing the kinds of great rewards you can get if you push yourself.

Should I fight Fire Dragon Mauna in the Metaphor: ReFantazio Nord Mines?

When you get to this second to last area in the Nord Mines in Metaphor: ReFantazio, Grius, Gallica, and Strohl all seem to suggest it’s a dangerous and deadly foe. While it is strong and could be considered as dangerous as a boss, such as the human we face just before it, it’s honestly incredibly manageable. Especially as it has the same weakness as the Homo Fulquilo boss we just fought. Plus, the weapon you gain access to after the bout is fantastic for Strohl.

So yes. Fight this dragon. Absolutely. It is worth it and not all that dangerous if you’re around level 10.

For this fight, you want at least one Mage on your team. I had Grius in the role, and it worked out well. Make sure he’s in the back row. Your hero is going to be the healer, so pop him in the back row for this fight too. Strohl can occasionally deal some damage, either with Melee or his Archetype’s damage-dealing ability. But your heavy hitter here will be Grius.

Whenever you can, have your Mage cast Blizz. If it’s possible to pass off a turn to him so he can hit the Fire Dragon Mauna twice with the spell, go for it. In my case, due to the order of the party and decisions, my avatar was always directly ahead of my Mage Grius for actions. So if my Seeker was going to get an additional turn, I’d pass so Grius could act and cast Blizz again. Do this until the dragon is dead. It honestly shouldn’t take too long.

Once it is over, you get 750 EXP, 600 A-EXP, 3,000 MAG, 1,000 money, and an Amethyst for winning the fight. You can then access the three items on the ground and chest behind where the dragon was standing. The items I found after the fight there were Glossy Fur, Grand Iron, and an Onyx. In the chest is a Dragon’s Indignation greatsword for the Warrior Archetype that deals slash damage. It has 111 ATK and 95 HIT, and it is perfect for Strohl or whoever your Warrior is.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. There is also a demo available.
