Shattered: Tale of the Forgotten King plays out in sidescrolling, trap-filled, labyrinthine stages. These stages each contain a major puzzle that has to be completed to finish the stage, as well as three lesser ones that will reward the player with narrative secrets and hidden items.

The game’s narrative secrets provide different angles on the storyline. Player’s will be given one side of the story through a character that follows them on their journey, while another two will be strewn about levels or hidden in out-of-the-way places. The most well-hidden items will help decipher the Demiurge’s alphabet, so to understand what these beasts say and get the full story, players will need to find all of these objects.

Each stage contains one of the twelve Demiurges as a boss. When players engage the Demiurge, the play style will switch to 3D combat, offering light and strong attacks, as well as dodges and dashes to avoid the boss’ attacks.
