Known as Kunio-kun’s Three Kingdoms in Japan, the game is based on an earlier title in the franchise, Downtown Special: River City Historical Drama!, released for the Famicom in 1991. River City Saga: Three Kingdoms features the River City cast as characters in the Chinese historical tale “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” The protagonist Kunio will play Guan Yu, and the story will cover the events from the Yellow Turban Rebellion to the Battle of Red Cliffs.

The game’s story mode features two-player online and local co-op. Additionally, “Heroes of the Three Kingdoms: Battle of Red Cliffs” is a new four-player mode with local and online co-op. In it, players will clear through ten stages while fighting enemies, bosses, and occasionally each other. The mode offers 24 different playable characters to choose from, some of whom do not appear in story mode. Furthermore, players can choose to turn friendly fire on or off, as well as find hidden stages.
