Back at Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix announced they were bringing Rise of Mana from smartphones to PlayStation Vita. While this is a free to play game, Rise of Mana goes back to the action RPG roots of the series with real time battles with a field to explore.

Rise of Mana was ready to be released, but the game’s producer wanted to further improve the game. Discussions started between Square Enix, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia and Unity, which Rise of Mana uses for its engine, to optimize Unity for PlayStation Vita. Rise of Mana supported Logitech’s smartphone controller as an optional accessory, but since the PlayStation Vita has a traditional controller the game has been rebalanced and levels were redesigned for Vita. Because of these changes data from the smartphone release cannot be moved into the Vita version.

Square Enix is planning crossovers for Rise of Mana starting with Toro and other games released for PlayStation Vita. Rise of Mana will be available on Japan’s PlayStation Store in mid-May.
