Sony and Housemarque’s Returnal is about to debut on the PS5, and a launch trailer helps set the stage once more. The idea is people are going through a roguelike shooter with Metroidvania elements as they attempt to break a time loop. To help better illustrate how this will work and its story will be told through it, the new footage shows exactly how loops might feel.
For example, this video begins with Selene crash landing on Returnal’s alien planet. However, it then shows that even though she’s crashing in a foreign place filled with strange monsters, it’s still recreating her own home. And it highlights how when she dies, she finds herself back at the very beginning. But every time she does die, it shows she’s coming closer to seeing and learning new things about Returnal’s planet and world. The video also highlights how, even though this is a third-person shooter, there are platformer-like traversal elements.
Here’s the Returnal “The Tide” PS5 launch trailer:
Previously, Housemarque worked on PlayStation exclusives like Super Stardust HD for the PS3, Resogun for the PS3, PS4, and Vita, and Matterfall for the PS4.
Returnal will come to the PS5 on April 30, 2021 for $69.99.
