Microsoft initially said back in May that indie developers wouldn’t be able to self-publish their games on the Xbox One. Then, just a week later, then-Xbox head Don Mattrick shared that the company would in fact introduce some sort of indie support program.
“We’re going to have an independent creator program,” Mattrick said at the time. “We’re going to sponsor it. We’re going to give people tools. We’re going to give more information.”
Now, sources tell Game Informer that Microsoft are reversing their decision on indie publishing restrictions entirely, and that independent developers will be able to publish their own games without the need for a publishing partner after all.
Game Informer also say that it will be possible for every Xbox One console to be converted into a debug unit that can play pre-release game code, through a software-level authorization at Microsoft’s end.
