Smartphone hit Puzzle & Dragons has reached 2 million downloads in North America, GungHo Online Entertainment have announced. However, while the game has done reasonably well in the west, it isn’t a supersized hit like it is in Asia.
Here’s a little bit of perspective. While 2 million in the U.S. sounds like a decent number, Puzzle & Dragons has been downloaded 21 million times between just Japan and Korea.
Regarding the game’s performance in the U.S., GungHo president Kazuki Morishita recently said to Siliconera, “It hasn’t seen a huge success, especially compared to Japan.”
“We’re looking at with a long term perspective and we will continue to update it with new content. We will finesse our service and have more promotions, so we will probably start pushing it more.”
Additionally, GungHo also plan to release a Nintendo 3DS RPG, Puzzle & Dragons Z, in Japan this fall, with a western release to follow at some point in the future. In the meantime, they’re pushing the smartphone game with clever collaborations like Batman and Angry Birds.
