Sony shared its financial results, where the company announced the latest PlayStation 4 shipment numbers as well as an increase in PS4 hardware sales to 79 million by March 2018.
As shown in the above chart for the Game & Network Services Segment, we can see an increase in both sales and operating income in the quarter that ended on September 2017 compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.
Sales increased 35.4% year-on-year (a 25% increase on a constant currency basis) to 433.2 billion yen. This significant increase was primarily due to an increase in PlayStation®4 (“PS4”) software sales including sales through the network, the impact of foreign exchange rates, as well as an increase in PS4 hardware sales.
The above chart provides an updated list of forecasts. Previously, Sony expected to sell 18 million PlayStation 4 units before the fiscal year ending March 31, 2018, but this has been revised to 19 million. In the second quarter of the current fiscal year, Sony shipped out 4.2 million PlayStation 4 units to retailers, putting the console’s total sales at 67.5 million.
