New Super Mario Bros. 2 was released in Japan last Saturday, and the game sold 407,503 copies over the weekend. Sales tracker, Media Create, say that this was 41.56% of the gameā€™s initial shipment.

That number may seem low, but Nintendo likely shipped excess copies of the game in preparation for upcoming strong demand. Japanā€™s Obon festival and summer break are both coming up, and will boost sales of the title.

Meanwhile, as we reported earlier in the week, Persona 4: Arenaā€™s launch outsold several other fighting games on the PlayStation 3 in Japan. The PS3 version of the game sold 128,485 copies in its opening week, while the Xbox 360 version sold 9,801 copies.

Media Create say thatā€™s over a 90% sell-through on both platforms. Congratulations, Index/Atlus and Arc System Works.
