NEC Personal Computer is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the PC-8001 and they’ve announced the PC-8001 Mini, or “PasocomMini PC-8001,” and it is being developed by HAL Laboratory. [Thanks , Engadget Japan.]
The hardware is being developed by HAL Laboratory, who are mostly known for the Kirby and Super Smash Bros. series, but back in their earlier days they’ve developed numerous titles on the PC-8001, MSX, and more. This isn’t the first mini hardware made by HAL Laboratory, as they also did the “PasocomMini MZ-80C” which released in May 2017, making it the second one under NEC PC in two years.
As for software, it comes with 16 titles included on an SD card:
- Space Mouse
- Lunar City SOS!!
- Snake World
- Astroid Belt
- Check P.
- PC-Jyan!
- Parachute
- Sub-Marine
- Space Ship
- Rocket Bomb
- Marine Belt
- Heiankyou Alien
- Jupiter Lander
- Mole Attack
- Orion 80
- Hashire! Skyline
In addition to the 16 titles, more titles will be available to download later. Details on future titles will be announced later.
As for the device itself, the PC-8001 Mini’s dimensions are 109.5×67×21mm, small enough to fit your palm.
You can connect to a screen with HDMI and also connect a mouse and keyboard with USB.
Unfortunately for fans, the PC-8001 Mini will only be available in limited numbers of around 500 units only. Those who purchase the PC-PM750NAA PC 40th Anniversary Edition Premium Package laptop (limited to 500) will get the PC-8001 Mini included as a set. The premium laptop package is going for 201,800 yen (roughly $1,900). The other way is through a lottery raffle available only for those who’ve purchased any LAVIE series PC by NEC.
