One Piece Film Red will follow the story of a new red-haired character with a powerful singing voice. In a message to fans, Oda stated that he was “tired of drawing legendary old men in movies” and wanted to draw a girl. He also highlighted that the movie’s director Goro Taniguchi was in fact the first person to animate the One Piece series back in 1998, with the release of One Piece: Defeat Him! The Pirate Ganzack! OVA.
Notably, the teaser reveals that the character Shanks will appear in the film. The official Funimation announcement also reveals that One Piece: Unlimited World Red‘s Patrick Redfield will be the movie’s central antagonist.
While Shueisha and Toei Animation have not confirmed a Western release, the teaser trailer does feature an official English translation. Furthermore, the English version of the movie’s official website states that One Piece Film: Red is “coming soon”. This may indicate that a Western release is currently in the works.
