Okamiden, a direct sequel to Okami, isn’t too far off for Japan. Capcom set September 30 as the day Chibiterasu makes his mark on the Nintendo DS.

I played a bit of Okamiden at E3 and like the original, Chibiterasu uses the Celestial Brush to create bridges and illuminate paintings. The brush isn’t Chibiterasu’s only tool. He can also toss the solar disc on his back, which acts sort of like a boomerang. Levels are designed so Chibiterasu has to split up from his partner, Nushi in the demo, at times. Sometimes the ground won’t be sturdy enough to hold both of them.

First run of the Japanese version comes with a paintbrush stylus and a microfiber cleaning cloth with cute Chibiterasu.

Capcom plans to publish Okamiden in North America early next year.
