Nintendo to Acquire Luigi’s Mansion Developer Next Level Games

Nintendo has announced its acquisition of developer Next Level Games. Next Level Games has developed titles such as Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for the Nintendo 3DS and Luigi’s Mansion 3 for the Nintendo Switch. Other Nintendo titles developed under Next Level Games includes Metroid Prime: Federation Force. The acquisition is scheduled to close on March 1, 2021. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

Nintendo officially released a statement on January 5, 2021 detailing the reason for the acquisition of the developer. This is primarily to “secure the availability of NLG development resources for Nintendo.” Additionally, the statement mentions that Nintendo anticipates “improved development speed and quality..” through the acquisition. The official statement goes on to mention that the “acquisition will only have minor effects on Nintendo’s results for this fiscal year.”

However, there were no specifications or details as to what Next Level Games will be working on after the acquisition in the official statement.

In December 2020, Nintendo announced that it would be partnering with Sony and Microsoft to commit to creating safer, online environments. This included an official statement from Corporate Vice President of Xbox Operations, Dave McCarthy, which detailed the plan and the three principles the corporations will abide by in order to create these spaces.
