Nier Director’s Thoughts On Kickstarter Funding

This article is over 12 years old and may contain outdated information

Tim Schafer raised over two million dollars with Kickstarter to create a new adventure game. If Double Fine can do it, why not Nier director Yoko Taro? A fan asked Taro that question in one a blog post about the future of social games.

"At first, Thank you very much for your message and playing Nier! We (our team) feel proud that Nier is played in France (and other country)," Taro replied in English.

"I knew about Mr Tim Schafer’s case. That is brave story but I’m afraid to do that. Because Nier isn’t made by only me. I need many people. Producers, designers, programmers, (and also player like you).
Maybe I need money, team and good timing. It’s very difficult. But I’ll try to find that. : ) I promise. Thanks lot again. And I apologize about my poor English."

While Bitmob writes Taro is "afraid" of using Kickstarter, I think Taro is commenting about the viability of using crowdfunding to jumpstart a project like Nier. Double Fine’s adventure game can be developed with a smaller team while an action game like Nier would need more staff to handle things like physics, 3D models, and if it were to be released overseas – localization staff.

Also, and I’ll throw this question to readers, do you think Nier be able to roundup two million dollars of funding in a month? Would you pledge say $50 for a sequel?

Thanks for the tip (fellow Xenogears fan?) Ushallbeasgods!
