The My Hero Academia fifth anime season is currently being broadcast, but Toho Films isn’t about to let fans forget My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission, the third feature film for the series. An update to the film’s official website and a spread in COMIC Natalie revealed more details about the new “stealth” costumes that will be worn by Deku, Shoto, and Bakugo in the film.
As described in the trailer released in March 2021, My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission involves protagonist Izuku “Deku” Midoriya along with his classmates Shoto Todoroki and Bakugo Katsuki getting drawn into an incident that leads Izuku to go on the lam, apparently wanted for mass murder. A mysterious organization called “Humarise” intends to destroy the Quirk superpowers that have reshaped society–along with the people that hold them. As part of a U.A. High-led task force charged with stopping Humarise’s genocidal scheme, the trio are given new stealth costumes to help them execute their mission.
Deku’s My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission costume shows the most dramatic set of changes. Based on his current “Gamma” costume, its color scheme has been inverted, from green with black lines and white highlights to black with green lines and highlights. His Shoot Style armored leg protectors and Air Force gloves are visible on his getup. The new stealth suit also retains Deku’s signature mask and a hood with “rabbit ears” that reference the hairstyle of Deku’s idol, All Might. The hood’s eye holes have been filled in with a pair of lenses, though, giving it a more ghostly vibe. Deku’s shoulder straps also connect to a small tank located on his back. A “WHA” logo is visible on the shoulders. The meaning of the “WHA” hasn’t been explained officially.
Given that Shoto’s usual costume is barely different from his school P.E. uniform, his upgrade for My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission is similarly subtle. It’s a monochrome take on his regular blue jumpsuit. His boots have more pronounced cleating, and Shoto’s rolled his sleeves down to stay in the shadows. The costume also has a full hood attached, with telltale gray piping that looks similar to the plated harness he wears for protection. He’s also wearing a small tank on his back, and a “WHA” patch adorns the shoulders.
Bakugo also had little to change for his tactical makeover. Aside from blacking out the remaining green portions of his regular costume as seen in season 5 of the anime series, Bakugo’s stripped his mask of its rear headdress portion. The biggest change, other than the addition of a hood, is in his grenade gauntlets. The regular ones are patterned after a Mk 2 Hand Grenade, but the “stealth” versions appear to be based on the M84 Stun Grenade. Like Shoto and Deku, Bakugo’s new duds also sport a back-mounted tank and a WHA logo.
My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission will premiere on August 6, 2021 in Japan. The ongoing fifth season is airing on streaming services globally. A new smartphone game, My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero, is taking pre-registrations on Android and iOS.
