What does the MW3 post-credits scene mean?

The post-credits scene at the end of Modern Warfare 3 will be familiar to most veteran players as it’s a continuation of a major storyline from 2022’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. However, new players jumping into the Activision series for the first time may be a bit confused about what is going on in the pivotal end scene.

In the reboot of MW2, General Shepherd infamously betrays Captain John Price and Task Force 141 after they discover he had been illegally shipping American missiles to the Middle East to trigger a war with Russia. The general had a breakdown after losing all of the men under his command from the nuclear blast in Call of Duty 4. As a result, Shepherd wanted to take out Vladimir Markov himself due to his obsession with revenge and being remembered as a hero in the history books.

While an antagonist in the series, the military leader believes he is a patriot and is doing what’s best for the cause. The MW3 post-credits is the shocking conclusion to this plot line, as Captain John Price is shown entering his office and executing him with a silenced pistol. Despite arguing that he was on the right side of history, the segment ends with Price pulling the trigger and killing the General.

In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Captain Price and Task 141 confront General Sheperd after discovering that he and Commander Graves knew how Hassan Zyani got his hand on the missing ballistic missiles. Despite telling Price to get his “head in the right direction” and look the other way over their cover-up, Price declares that he will go after the General and Graves next. These are the events that lead up to the plot of the MW3 campaign.
