The Monster Hunter movie’s desert setting is based on the Wildspire Wastes of Monster Hunter: World. The film is loosely based on the Monster Hunter games by Capcom. It is written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, best known for the Resident Evil film series.
The film was first announced back in September 2016 when executive producer Ryozo Tsujimoto casually announced at TGS that the series was getting a new movie made in Hollywood. Paul W. S. Anderson also revealed at the time that its budget will be close to that of the Resident Evil movies.
After announcing Milla Jovovich as its star in May 2018, we learned that actors T.I. Harris and Ron Perlman are also joining the cast. We finally got a peek at the upcoming film with a trailer at the Shanghai International Film Festival last June. Since then, there hasn’t been much about the movie but we can expect to see more in the near future.
The Monster Hunter movie will premiere on September 4, 2020.
