Monster Hunter 4 has already outdone Capcom’s expectations, the publisher announced today.

Capcom expected to move 2.8 million copies of Monster Hunter 4 by March 31st, 2014. As of today, however, they’ve already moved over 3 million copies of the game, between retail shipments and download sales via the Nintendo eShop.

For some perspective, 2010’s Monster Hunter Portable 3rd shipped 3 million copies in 17 days, a feat that has taken Monster Hunter 4 a month to achieve. However, Portable 3rd was launched in December, close to the holiday season, which typically provides popular games with a significant boost in sales.

Monster Hunter 4 won’t enjoy its first holiday season for another two months, but when it does, it should be interesting to see if the game can outsell Portable 3rd in the long run.
