Miquella’s Barrier and How to Break it in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Elden Ring‘s New Expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree has brought with it a number of regions to explore and mysteries to solve. One such mystery is the barrier decorated with Miquella’s emblem at the bottom of a great hole in the Cerulean Coast. This guide will detail where Miquella’s Barrier is in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree and how to break it.

If you, like me, are the type of player who devotes themselves to wandering as far and as wide as they can, chances are you found yourself in the far south Cerulean Coast, in the Fissure Site of Grace, staring at the golden wall with Miquella’s emblem. If you interact with it, all it tells you is that it is “Sealed and Obscured by Miquella.” There’s no clear way to get past Miquella’s Barrier and, like many things in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, it demands you try going somewhere else to get a better view of the situation.

How to Break Miquella’s Barrier

Breaking this barrier is a simple enough process. It is a story-sealed door that will open once Tarnished make their way through the Shadowed Lands. Specifically, the door will open once you progress past Castle Ensis up to the gates of the Shadow Keep, the massive structure at the north. Once there, players will get a message that reads “Somewhere, a Great Rune has broken.” This is your sign that the path that was once blocked is now wide open. Here is where you’ll need to get to:

What Next?

Down through the cave where the barrier once was is a new passage that leads players down further into the Fissure, and into the Stone Coffin Fissure. The Fissure. If you continue through this area you will find The Stone Coffin Fissure. However, breaking Miquella’s Barrier does more than just unlock a new area to explore.

Once the Great Rune is broken, many NPCs, led to the Shadow Realm by Miquella, have new perspectives to share. I highly recommend checking in with everyone you’ve met to see where and how their stories develop. Chances are, they’ll reveal some interesting new insights, or give context to their plans and ambitions.

Elden Ring and the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox, and PC.
