In addition to being able to call upon an echo or swap to Swordfighter form, Zelda can wind up an Automaton like Techtite from Dampe to attack after completing the “Automaton Engineer Dampe” The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom quest. However, this only happens after repairing the Hyrule Castle rift and is a bit of a multistep process.
How do I start “Automaton Engineer Dampe” in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
To kick off this sidequest, first repair the Suthorn, Gerudo, Jabul, and Hyrule Castle rifts. So the only ones on the map should be the ones on Mount Lanaryu, at Eldin Volcano, and in the Faron Wetlands. Teleport to the waypoint in Hyrule Fields and head directly south of it. (I also had Zelda’s horse by this point, which helps for one of Dampe’s eventual Automaton recipes.) You’ll see a scripted scene in which Dampe is complaining about the bird-like Crow monster stealing his key.
Reclaiming the key is not difficult at all. The Crow is flying around and will be at the tree directly below Dampe initially. However, it will deal damage and cause you to drop rupees if it attacks you. I recommend using a Peahat to quickly deal with it. Defeat the it to retrieve the key.
Talk to Dampe. He’ll then return to his home at the base of Mount Lanaryu. There’ll be an icon indicator on the map, which you can turn on by selecting the “Automaton Engineer Dampe” sidequest in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. You need to build your first Automaton to finish his sidequest and get Zelda a new type of ally.
How do I build Techtite in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom?
Once you get to Dampe’s home, he’ll make his first request of you. You need to summon certain echoes on a metal platform in his workshop to inspire him to make new creations. This first request helps you build the Techtite, your first Automaton in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, gain access to the feature, and be able to take on additional Dampe requests.
There are two monster echoes you need for this first request. The first you probably already got in Hyrule Field or near Hyrule Ranch. The other primarily resides in areas in the Faron Wetlands. Here are his descriptions for them and their identities:
- “Creature with the big eye—the sort that’s always jumping around” – Tektite
- “Something that shoots hot smoke out of its backside to blast forward” – Mothula
Here’s how both look, in case their names don’t ring a bell.
Summoning both echoes on the platforms gets you the Techtite and the clockwork key to wind it in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Dampe will also leave a notebook out next to him with additional Automaton request quests you can take.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is available for the Nintendo Switch.
