Square Enix announced that those playing FFXI will soon be unable to access Limbus due to updates and upgrades. This will be a temporary measure. There is no word on how long maintenance on the area will last. However, people will have a chance to continue to explore the dimension for now, as work won’t begin on it until the launch of the February 2025 update.
FFXI Director and Producer Yoji Fujito announced the Limbus shutdown on the official forums for the game and talked about why the dimension will be temporarily unavailable. The goal is to make them “independent of group type” so they will be set to “everyone’s current level.” This would make it easier for more players to head into Apollyon and Temenos. Because of the size and scope, it will need to be completely unavailable during the adjustment process.
Fujito also teased what the area will be like after the update. He noted there would be “all-new adventures” in the statement. He also mentioned that Limbus won’t require Ancient Beastcoins after the update, but that during the downtime there will be ways to get those, chips, and equipment upgrade materials.
In his 2025 new year’s message, Fujito talked about the future of the game. While Limbus didn’t come up, he did discuss changes to gameplay elements like Besieged. He again mentioned that there will be higher levels for it soon.
As for more recent changes, January 2025 additions came up. There will be new Records of Eminence objectives. He teased Rhapsodies of Vana’diel’s The Orb’s Radiance will become a high-tier mission battlefield. The new Ambuscade notorious monsters will involve Iron Giants in Volume 1 and Mandragora with Citrullus and Lycopodium in Volume 2. There will also be some new items and titles.
Final Fantasy XI is available on PCs.
