Legendary Entertainment has just recently closed a deal to film rights for Pokémon, and both it and The Pokémon Company have announced that the first movie in the deal will feature Detective Pikachu.

The live-action film will be based on the Nintendo 3DS game that came out earlier this year in Japan called Great Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Duo, which features the titular Detective Pikachu as he works alongside a boy named Tim to solve numerous mysteries.

As of right now, specifics on the movie’s plot and characters are being kept a secret, though the film will begin production sometime next year.

Toho will be handling distribution of the movie in Japan, while Universal Pictures will be in charge of the film’s distribution outside of Japan.
