Update: Kingdom Hearts 3D actually sold over 200,000 copies in August. See this story for details.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold over 240,000 copies at retail in North America during the month of August, Nintendo have revealed.

The Nintendo 3DS game took the #2 spot on the NPD top-ten chart for the month. Nintendo, however, did not reveal sales figures for the download version of the game, which was released simultaneously with the retail version.

At #3 was Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, also for the Nintendo 3DS. This game, Nintendo say, sold over 180,000 copies. This figure does not include sales of the “Mark of Mastery” edition of the game.

For the sake of comparison, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, which was released for the PSP in 2010, sold 225,000 copies in its first month.
