In October last year, developer Ikumi Nakamura shared a video on Twitter featuring Platinum Games’ Hideki Kamiya, where Kamiya stated, “Okami is going to be back.” As a follow-up in that same video, Nakamura asked, “Really?” To which Kamiya replied, “Really.” However, Kamiya and Atsushi Inaba revealed in an interview that this was him getting carried away with a bit of fun between fellow developers. [Thanks, GameXplain!]
In the interview, which began on the topic of The Wonderful 101: Remastered and Project G.G., but eventually expanded to other topics, Kamiya had a wry smile on his face as he was asked whether there has been any discussion since then and whether he could talk about it, and whether he’s had ideas for a sequel.
Atsushi Inaba, sitting besides Kamiya, immediately told Kamiya while laughing, “Hey, take responsibility for making a statement like that.” Kamiya replied with a wry smile, saying, “I’m not sure how to respond to this…,” and Inaba provided some context by saying to Kamiya, “You really got too carried away that time. Why not just say that you’ve always wanted to make one?”
Kamiya expanded upon this, saying that he doesn’t want to say that it’s never gonna happen, and while he’d love to do it, there’s nothing set right now. If enough people call out for it, there might be an impact. Apart from Okami 2, Kamiya has ideas like “Dante vs Bayonetta, Devil May Cry 0: Episode of Sparda… a lot.”
Okami is available on the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 2. Okami HD is available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
